Cats are often seen as low maintenance pets who look after themselves, but there are still a number of things cat owners should take into consideration to ensure a happy, healthy feline.
The first, and most important, fact to understand is that cats are obligate carnivores. A carnivore is a meat-eater, but obligate means that it is absolutely necessary for survival. As cats categorically must have meat, you might be surprised to learn that most commercial cat food contains less than 10% meat. (And it’s usually not the good stuff either, typically meat derivatives which is a polite way of saying the nasty leftovers.) While cats are obligate carnivores, they have not evolved to process cereals and grains which most manufacturers use to bulk up the cat food. This leads to fat lethargic cats and endless health issues as these products are equivalent to humans solely eating junk food.
For optimum health we recommend raw feeding your cat. As well as following the whole prey diet with raw meat and bones in the ratio of 80% meat, 10% bones and 10% offal, cats need taurine which is most readily
provided through heart. We stock a number of raw food options including our own brand, Unique Raw, which has 10% heart and is therefore suitable for cats. We also stock Purrform, True Instinct, Nutriment and Natural Instinct raw food for cats. If raw food doesn’t suit you or your cat, for whatever reason, we have a selection of high quality wet and dry food. For more information, please read our blog on the best diet for your cat.
We adopt the same holistic approach to health for cats, preferring natural remedies where possible over chemical treatments. However it is important to be aware of specific issues which affect cats. Cats do not have a high thirst drive so they do not naturally drink enough water. A cat who doesn’t drink enough will have smelly concentrated urine, overloaded kidneys and be susceptible to urinary tract infections. We stock all the Vince The Vet supplements and remedies to support your cat with any number of conditions and ailments. Come in store and ask one of our trained members of staff for help.
Treats and Toys
Cats may be more fickle and aloof than dogs, but even the most stubborn cat can be tempted with the right treat. We have a wide range of meat treats and dried fish to entice your cat for a cuddle. While cats may seem content to laze in bed all day, they can get easily fed up, which can lead to bad behaviour. A short designated play time each day will break up the boredom. Play time not only provides human / feline bonding time, but also gives your cat vital mental stimulation, particularly if you vary the toys and games.
We have a wide range of cat toys and treats to entertain both you and your kitty and provide hours of fun bonding. These chase games mimic the prey drive that cats in the wild have and will satisfy his need to stalk, pounce and attack. The catnip-filled Kong Kickeroo then provides a great hind-leg kicking action to give your cat ultimate satisfaction.
Over half of domestic cats are overweight to some degree. Playing games without any food reward is a great way to help your kitty get more active and lose weight. Managing your cat’s lifestyle at a young age will also help prevent long-term old age problems such as arthritis and diabetes. If you feed your cat a dry biscuit, then why not make her work for her food by putting it in a treat dispenser. These fun wobblers provide hours of entertainment as your cat bats it around and rewards her whenever she manages to tip it in the right direction. We also have a selection of maze feeders to challenge and slow down your cat’s eating.
Warning: Spending time playing with your cat can also seriously improve your mood!
Finally, we have a selection of collars, beds, blankets, scratching posts and litter trays for cats, so whether you have a pedigree or rescue moggy, we are a one-stop cat shop.
